Mayor Of A Time
So it’s the time of the year that Tamworth gets a new Mayor…generally the controlling group gets to pick the person they want, so who will take over from John Harper…. My thoughts are it will be one of the old guard Labour have brought in…so, Norchi, Couchman or Foster…or will Dick Kingstone be trying to impress his friends on the square to nominate him.?
I do find it disappointing that Ken has returned having been made Alderman….a title bestowed on long serving Cllr’s after completing their time in office.
It also is the time when Cabinet and committee Chairs are decided. Again the power is in Labour’s hands and will they choose wisely I wonder?
Leader and deputy will be Dean and Bain which is a worry as either of them couldn’t be a good chair in a dining room suite.
So, four or five cabinet positions to be decided on top of that…Will they give the young guns of the Labour group a run out? Or pack it with the oldies? I suspect a slight mix, but I doubt the capable Sarah Daniels will get a look in.
It also leaves the Chairs and vice Chairs of committees such as planning and a scrutiny to be decided…the number of members suggest some newly elected Cllr’s with no experience will get some sort of position – how wonderful will that be……
The Annual Mayor Making ceremony is pencilled in for the 21st May and usually gets an interesting bunch of observers. I may go!

Independents Not All That Bad
While I agree with a lot of what you say, and very much like your website, I do disagree with some of your latest post.
Good independent people who don’t want to conform to any party you can indeed get, remember the Dr who became MP in Kidderminster I think.
Being independent at a local level is in my opinion a good thing, it gives you a chance to take each decision and vote accordingly in the best interests of those you represent and the town you represent. At the very least at a local level the political parties should do away with a whip, that shouldn’t be needed at a local level. Why not have more local parties/residents associations and take the national element out of local politics?
That said I agree we are stuck in a 2 party system. Many people don’t vote, many more will never vote for the winning candidate, and some vote a certain way for tactical reasons due to our First Past The Post Political System. For every vote to matter we need proportional representation, maybe turnout would even increase, and everyone could vote for who they want to win, not who they know can beat the person they don’t want to win!
Any thoughts?
[Debunking Response: Unfortunately while it sounds great that Independents can vote for what they think is best, that vote goes nowhere. It gets drowned out by groups that have discussed the best way forward between them to take the action they feel best and can actually make it happen. People vote for other people to get on and lead, local government is slow enough without decisions taking an age to agree on. Watch the first Tamworth Council meeting of May last year to see that chaos in action. It’s a myth that you have to ‘conform’ within a political party, at least so we are told regarding the Tories. You are apparently allowed your own voice, it’s rare you see that in Labour Councillors. If any party is whipped on a decision it has to be declared. Again what we know of the Tory side is that it is used for internal issues only, not policy.]

Act Stable
Jazz is another one who has been Tory, Labour and everything in between. Sometimes politics attracts the egos.
Carol Dean is not on the way out, they will grin and back her for a good long while. Better to play act stability.
Now that local Labour can no longer sit quiet on the benches at full council meetings, it should get more interesting. I just hope we hear fewer wittering from Councillor’s Bain and Adams and more from the Clarkes.
Will Labour hit the ground running and set an opening date for a ‘listening’ Council front desk? Will they be working their butts off to keep the In Bloom winning streaks going, promoting Tamworth as a tourist destination? Will they fix all those potholes they somehow promised to resolve? And install fly tipping cams in every green space, terraced street and underpass? Probably not!
Hoping there won’t be debates about their usual topics of bin placement, damp around council house windows and cancelling big events.
Time will tell!
Hope Kingstone doesn’t become Mayor. He thinks he has it in the bag again. The only allowance he didn’t want to challenge.
Cllr Daniels so community minded and actually attends civic events so would make a very cheery active mayor with a bright, young upstart like Cllr Smith for deputy.
Two years until the next TBC election. Hope the Tories counted up how much money was left before they handed it all over!

Paul Brindley may have a lot to answer for, he may be a twat, a knob, mental ill and much more but let’s not forget the other man who has a big part to play in what happened yesterday…..Cllr Richard Kingstone who calls himself an upstanding member of the Tamworth community.
His morals leave a lot to be desired, he set out to make at least one amazing Cllr lose his seat. He stabbed people who once classed him as a friend/colleague in the back and didn’t look back.
His actions were disgraceful, disgusting and damn right dishonest. For someone who feared a Labour run town he switched sides quicker than Brina at an all male brothel all in the name of taken a good Cllrs county seat next year. Corruption at its finest with that Richard.
I hope the conservatives come back fight hard and in the mean time show Labour up for the clueless clowns they are in the chamber.
