Former Tamworth Borough Councillor and current Fazeley Town Councillor Andrew Cooper (Hi Andy!) has come out in defence of Sarah Edwards MP after last night’s attacks on the Holiday Inn hotel. Cooper who stood against Edwards in the parliamentary by-election to replace Chris Pincher has decided that Edwards is facing undeserved flack for her stance on the hotel.
Whilst the hotel has indeed been used for housing asylum seekers for a while now (it was widely reported and definitely not a secret, apparently people do not understand what doxing means), as we reported yesterday Edwards has in our opinion been helping to fan the flames with phrases such as “Tamworth people want their hotel back”. It doesn’t help to make such claims when racists are trying to find any old excuse for a night of violence to sate their fragile masculinity. No matter how many times Edwards stands up to say the word Tamworth in parliament for brownie points, it isn’t going to change the due process around the hotel, which even under the Conservative government would have eventually been emptied.
Unfortunately we have to disagree with Cooper on this issue, since Edwards absolutely did not need to bring this emotive issue to the foreground so publicly. A lot of the real work of an MP goes on in the background with correspondence and meetings and even written questions. Standing up in parliament and speaking is a meaningless show to make it appear as if you’re doing something. Some people take notice, some people who lack intelligence use these statements as an excuse to justify their actions. It didn’t need putting back out there.

It seems the aftermath of last nights riot is thankfully nowhere near as bad as it could have been. We understand having seen various social media videos that the hotel is not substantially damaged. We had been told yesterday that in fact the asylum seekers had been moved to safety prior to what was billed to be a ‘peaceful’ protest occurring. We dread to think what could have happened if more racist morons had turned up to join in. Regardless of what people think of the asylum seekers, many of them have been through experiences that would make the vile scum who rioted wet themselves in fear. Ultimately it is they who are the problem and as we said yesterday, it is they that should be chucked out of our country.
We believe as Andrew Cooper has eluded to in his post, that there is a cleanup by residents planned today. It thankfully shows that all is not lost when it comes to real humanity shining through. Long term, the government need to sort out illegal immigration in the first place so that these sort of events are consigned to history. It still isn’t right that criminals dictate who comes into our country, and the following pressure it exerts on the asylum process unnecessarily. Using a tourist hotel smack bang in the middle of a town centre was never a clever idea in the first place when local economies are struggling. We have however lived with the current residents mostly peacefully for four years now, and it is not they who are causing the trouble.
